Using this site safely

If you're on a shared, monitored, or unfamiliar device, these steps can help protect your privacy.

Leave this site quickly

The Exit site ↗ button appears on every page — on larger screens it's in the top-right corner, on smaller screens it's in the bottom-right. Clicking it immediately opens a weather website in a new tab and replaces your browser history, making it harder for someone to press back and return here.

You can also press Shift three times in quick succession from any page to trigger the same exit without clicking.

Private browsing

Private browsing (sometimes called Incognito mode) means your browser won't save the pages you visit, your searches, or anything you type into forms. It also clears cookies when you close the window.

Note: Private browsing does not hide your activity from your internet provider, employer network, or anyone monitoring the device at a deeper level.

How to open a private window:

  • ChromeCtrl+Shift+N (Windows/Linux) or +Shift+N (Mac)
  • FirefoxCtrl+Shift+P (Windows/Linux) or +Shift+P (Mac)
  • EdgeCtrl+Shift+N
  • Safari+Shift+N

Clearing your browsing history

If you've been browsing without private mode and want to remove this site from your history, you can delete specific entries or clear everything.

  • Open history — press Ctrl+H (Windows/Linux) or +Y (Mac, Chrome) in most browsers
  • Right-click on an individual history entry to delete just that page
  • Use "Clear browsing data" to delete all history from a specific time range

On a shared or monitored device

  • If possible, use a library computer, a friend's phone, or a device that isn't connected to a shared home network.
  • If someone else can access the device, remember to close all tabs and clear your browsing history when you're done.
  • If your internet connection or device is monitored by someone else, private browsing may not be sufficient — a different network or device is a safer option.
